Global Energy Security

In the past 35-40 years, worldwide energy consumption has nearly doubled, driven by population growth, rising living standards, invention of energy-dependent technologies, and consumerism. If these trends continue, global energy consumption will double again by mid-century. It is clear that achieving a sustainable global energy framework, capable of meeting the energy needs of citizens, without causing irreparable environmental damage, will require continuing technological advances that modify our current production and use of energy.

Institute Research
in Energy and the Environment

The research leaders who work, study, and innovate at Rensselaer share a common focus: unearthing new opportunities for solving the 21st century’s most challenging problems.

Right now, more than 6.5 billion people are competing for the Earth’s dwindling supply of fossil fuels. By 2050, there will be 8-10 billion, and major advances in energy technology will be required to meet their needs.

Rensselaer has faced that challenge by launching and expanding research programs in renewable energy sources and energy conservation. The Institute is also dedicated to tackling major environmental concerns, particularly the global need for clean, safe water.
